Costs are generally a function of condition and what is referred to as CNF. the Cost of New Raw Wood Fencing. That is, the cost of a quality new wood fence of the same design and specification, usually expressed in terms of dollars per linear foot. Currently, the CNF for a typical six foot cedar picket wood privacy fence of good quality is in the range of $30 to $40 per linear foot or more, depending on various factors of design and site circumstances. Raw Wood means that surface treatment has been applied and the wood begins fading and weathering immediately- dissapates ,uch like that new car smell, but faster.
A new wood fence, or one less than a year old, will usually require no repairs and and only nominal surface restoration and preparation. Thus a quotation in the 1/4 NFC range is possible, assuming there is full access to both sides of the fence and that no added features (such as a mid-rail) will be required. Both sides must be serviced in order that a five year warranty can be included. However, when only one side is serviced, the warranty is for the surface finish only.
FIVE YEAR WARRANTY against fade to grey !.
An "almost new fence" is typically less than two years old, and will require nominal surface restoration and minor repairs. This fence is usually in the range of nine months to 24 months old, and the wood is beginning to fade. Typically needed repairs include loosened pickets and minor structural repairs, including gates. FIVE YEAR WARRANTY against fade to grey !.
A "middle aged wood fence" is one that is showing its age, and could be which could anywhere from 2 to 8 years, and will exhibit a weathered grey appearance with perhaps some warped, loosened or missing pickets. The fence may be sagging or leaning in some sections. While the cost may approach 2/3 CNF, the resulting fence will be beautiful, preserved, structurally sound, and warranted for FIVE years, while a new fence - 50% more costly - will soon be "old again". FIVE YEAR WARRANTY against fade to grey !.
This fence "may" be as old as 20 years or more- but still have a potential for repair, restoration and preservation. Its problems may include fence posts rotted at ground level, and some sections may be laying on the ground. If judged feasible for restoration, the finished product will be attractive, straight, stout, and FIVE YEAR WARRANTY against fade to grey !.
The purpose of a mid-rail is to have a third horizontal member to which the fence pickets can be secured. This will minimize warping and bowing in and out when pickets are secured only at the top and bottom. This action is a principle cause of original picket fasteners (nails or staples) working loose. An existing fence cannot be warranted without the presence of a mid-rail. All MFW fasteners are coated deck screws.
A kick plate is a PT 6" member secured to the finish side of the fence at ground level, covering the lower extremity of all fence pickets.
The purpose is three-fold, (1) a solid base plate to absorb all impact from lawn mowers, errant children, etc (2) passage under the fence by animals is minimized, and (3) eroded lower ends of fence picket are covered, resulting in a more uniform appearance.
This upgrade provides a cap rail and cover for the top of the fence pickets. There are several advantages - a more uniform and attractive fence, the covering of irregular pickets tops, and water is drained away from the interior structure of the fence. The standard cap rail is composed of wood - PT Pine and/or Cedar. All elements preserved and protected on all sides and ends.
Never have to buy a new fence again !
